As we talk about depression, we hear a lot about taking care of our spiritual self. Not to be confused with religious self, our spiritual self is how we feel about our place in the world as a matter of the energy we are and the energy we receive.
Spirituality is also in the things we do or the places we go that makes us feel most like ourselves.
I was at my first counseling session with my new therapist on Friday and I found myself saying that lately I feel like, "I'm getting my weird back." On reflection I know that means I'm coming back into myself. I feel like I've been a dulled version of myself for some time now. My clue came from a funny place... from the chimes and cool piece of art at my front door. Hence the video share (and for the life of me I can't get it to rotate, sorry). I finally put those chimes up just about three weeks ago and I've been in this house since July. And now when I step out the door or come home, they stop me every time to stand still for a moment and listen.
I want to ask you to do something just for yourself at some point this week. We tend to fill our days with all the busy things we think we have to do, or, depending where you are in life, maybe you avoid doing things because of the pains of mental illness.
Wherever you are at, I want you to put it aside for a bit of time to yourself. It doesn't have to be anything grand. It can be a walk in the woods, a long bubble bath, a yoga class, a visit to an organic restaurant alone, a movie.... doesn't matter what it is. What matters is it's something just for you.
Personally, I feel most like myself in and around the water. So today, I'm going to Tank Action Spa which just opened yesterday. I've never tried sensory deprivation before and I'm looking forward to it.
